Initialview简介
The Initialview is a third-party interview that offers in-person interviews in various cities across China as well as online. This interview service has no relation to universities but will allow you to send your interviews to as many universities as you’d like to help support your application.
The interviews typically last 15 minutes and it is important to note that each interview is unscripted. This means that interviewers will ask you about your interests and then follow up questions will be based on the answers you give. Therefore, it is important for students to think about what makes them unique while also emphasizing academic experiences.
The Initialview also has a mandatory writing sample that will also be sent to universities.
Prior to doing the Initialview, it is always a good idea to get a lot of practice in, so it would be best for you to do numerous mock interviews to prepare. This way, you will get to experience what an interview setting is like which will help you get an idea of what to expect.
It is generally suggested for you to have 3-4 talking points that highlight different parts of your personality and interests, with 1 central story that you will be able to use for a variety of questions.
Note that interviewers often try to challenge and trick students with negative and weird questions such as “What would you change about your school?”, “What is your least favorite subject?”, or “What is something you wish you could change about yourself?”.
If you encounter such questions, it is important to remember not to be too negative in your response because you do not want to make it seem like you hate your school or a certain subject.
Instead the best way to approach this question is to remember the 20:80 ratio, where 20% of your answer is negative while 80% of the answer is positive.
After you have mentioned the negative part of the answer, you will want to always bring your response back to a positive light with some sort of redemption by demonstrating how you have exceeded restrictions or how you are trying to improve less-than-ideal situations.
Interviewers will also tend to ask at least one strange or unexpected question to catch students off guard. For example, one might be asked “If you could meet any important figure in the past or present, who would it be and what would you talk about?” .
Such questions might be difficult to prepare for, but if you find yourself in such a situation, it is a good idea to think about what your strengths and interests are.
If a student is interested in studying history, it would be a great idea for the student to think about a time in history in which he/she is very knowledgeable about and discuss a prominent figure (e.g. President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War).
Alternatively, if the student is very interested in sustainability or renewable energy, perhaps it would be a good idea for the student to talk about Elon Musk. Generally, playing to your strengths is always the way to go when encountering unexpected questions.
Before the end of the interview, the interviewer will always ask something along the lines of “Is there anything else you would like to share about yourself?” This will be the perfect opportunity to share anything about yourself that is interesting or that is important for someone to know about you. Whether it’s a quirk, a fun fact, or highlighting one of your strengths, this is your chance to shine.
Therefore, it is very important for you to have an answer to this question; having 3-4 talking points that highlight your personality and interests will generally ensure that you will always have something to say even at the very end of the interview.
Although you will be very prepared after completing numerous mock interviews, it is important for you to remember not to sound too rehearsed while you are delivering your answers since that will likely result in a monotonous and unengaging conversation.
At the same time, remember to avoid rambling and giving monosyllabic responses. It is also normal to be nervous when it comes to doing interviews but try your best to avoid filling uncomfortable sentences with “you know” “like” or “uh”.
If the interview does not go well, don’t worry about it too much because you can always sign up for another interview. However, note that you must wait 30 days before doing the interview again, and doing a second interview will automatically erase the first one so think carefully before deciding to do it again. Best of luck on your interview!
